Injured teenager fights for future

A week ago, 18-year-old Chase Borders had everything going for him. He was graduating from Tallassee High School and embarking on a promising future in professional motocross.

Today, Borders can't feel anything below his chest, and doctors say he will likely never walk again.

His future in motocross came to a screeching halt on Saturday, less than 24 hours after graduation, when Borders crashed his dirtbike at Monster Mountain MX Park in Tallassee. The teenager and his single-parent father, Johnny Borders, now face a potential lifetime of medical needs.

Borders was practicing his moves Saturday when he flipped over the handlebars of his bike and landed helmet first, said Tom Brinkman, a family friend. The landing fractured his C-5 vertebrae at the base of his neck.

Borders also broke both collarbones and his right femur in the crash, Brinkman said.

"It's just devastating news," Brinkman said. "It was a freak accident. Chase is one of the most experienced riders at Monster Mountain. He was practicing a jump he's done probably 1,000 times before. We don't know what happened."

The teenager was taken to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, then life-flighted to the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham after X-rays showed the broken vertebrae. He had surgery Sunday morning to repair his spine.

Borders has limited movement in his arms, but has not been able to move anything from his chest down, Brinkman said.

"The doctors told his father there was no visible damage to his spinal cord," Brinkman said. "But they said there is not much chance of him recovering the use of his legs or hands."

Brinkman said word of the crash spread quickly throughout the close-knit motocross community. Johnny Borders has received calls from across the country.

"We're all heartbroken, trying to figure out what we can do," Brinkman said. "We're trying to organize a benefit race at Monster Mountain. Johnny's a single parent with a child who is going to need 24/7 care."

Calls to Johnny Borders' cell phone went unanswered Tuesday. Brinkman said Borders was "camped out" in the intensive care unit with his son.

An account has been set up at Compass Bank in Chase Borders' name, Brinkman said.

Lynn Adams, co-owner of Adams Motorsports, said her business is also working to help Borders, who is one of its sponsored riders.

"Right now, we have a bucket set up for donations," Adams said. "We're going to do more, we just haven't figured out how we're going to do it yet."

Adams described Borders as a "good kid."

Carl Stewart, principal of Tallassee High School, agreed.

"He is a quiet, likeable young man," Stewart said. "He had a lot of friends at school."

Stewart said he learned of Borders' accident when he arrived at school Tuesday following the Memorial Day weekend. He described the new graduate as a student who never got into trouble at school.

"This is just a tragic situation," Stewart said. "But we've been marred by tragedy this year."

A former Tallassee High student and athlete, Brandon "Bouke" Peters, drowned April 23 while swimming in the Tallapoosa River. The 22-year-old and his wife were expecting their first child this summer.
