apparently, I have a mental disorder...

Was watching the news today and learned that I am 'mentally ill'

Yes, they have changed things to include caffeine addiction to the list of mental illnesses!

Caffeine-Related Disorder is what it is called. Here is what one site says about it:

LUDICROUS DIAGNOSIS. Psychiatrists base their diagnosis off of a book known as
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). This book contains such
classifications as “Caffeine-Related Disorder” (can be found on page 212 of this
book); “Mathematics Disorder” (can be found on page 50 of this book);
“Expressive Language Disorder” (can be found on page 55 of this book); or even
“Disorder of Written Expression” (which can be found on page 51 of this book).
ANY of these “diseases” are cause, per the Diagnostics and Statistical Manual
for a person to be put on powerful, mind-altering psychiatric drugs.

No, they do mean abuse of caffeine in all forms!

If you look at the emedicine article, http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic3115.htm
it does speak in terms of the amount that people consume, be it coffee, tea, soda or other items laden with caffeine. Of course, pills like no doz or other such items, can do the same thing, but if you read the article which illustrates the mental health definition, you will see that they are speaking of liquids. Anyone can hypothetically abuse coffee or soda just like pills with caffeine.

" DSM-IV criteria for caffeine intoxication
Recent consumption of caffeine, usually in excess of 250 mg (more than 2-3 cups of brewed coffee)
Demonstration of 5 or more of the following signs during or shortly after caffeine use:

Restlessness

Nervousness

Excitement

Insomnia

Flushed face

Diuresis

Gastrointestinal disturbance

Muscle twitching

Rambling flow of thought and speech

Tachycardia or cardiac arrhythmia

Periods of inexhaustibility

Psychomotor agitation
The above symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
The symptoms are not due to a general medical condition and are not better accounted for by another mental disorder, such as an anxiety disorder."

Of course, you have to consume the caffeine and also have the name symptoms associated with the "mental disorder."

And there are also other classifications:

"DSM-IV criteria for caffeine-induced anxiety disorder
Prominent anxiety predominates in the clinical picture.
There is evidence from the history, physical examination, or laboratory findings suggesting that the anxiety developed within 1 month of caffeine intoxication or withdrawal or that medications containing caffeine are etiologically related to the disturbance.

The disturbance is not better accounted for by an anxiety disorder that is not substance-induced.

The disturbance does not occur exclusively during the course of a delirium.

The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning."

and you cannot forget the 'sleep disorder'

"DSM-IV criteria for caffeine-induced sleep disorder
A prominent disturbance in sleep occurs that is sufficiently severe to warrant independent clinical attention.

There is evidence from the history, physical examination, or laboratory findings that the sleep disturbance is the direct physiological consequence of caffeine consumption.

The disturbance is not better accounted for by another mental disorder.

The disturbance does not occur exclusively during the course of a delirium.

The disturbance does not meet the criteria for breathing-related sleep disorder or narcolepsy.

The sleep disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning."

there are more listed in the article!!

And while I drink a lot of diet
Coke, and ice tea, an rare cup of coffee, the only issue I will have if I stopped is headaches due to withdrawal! So, whatever it is, it is. If I had some of that other stuff, well, maybe I would worry.
